Cardiac Services Accredited Echocardiography Laboratory

One American dies every 32 seconds of cardiovascular disease, disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States, costing society over 83.7 billion dollars each year in health services, medications and lost work time due to disability. Cardiac structure and flow information provided by echocardiographic testing is useful in the detection and management of many types of heart disease. This noninvasive test has become one of the standard diagnostic tools in cardiology with an estimated 10 million echocardiograms performed annually in the United States. Echocardiography is a complex imaging technique that relies on the experience and training of both the physician and sonographer. Their interpretation and technical abilities determine the diagnostic accuracy of an echocardiographic examination. The Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Echocardiography Laboratories (IACEL) has developed an accreditation program which evaluates the quality of these and other critical elements of an echocardiography laboratory.

Harbor Opens a PFT Lab as part of our Physician Diagnostics Sleep Program

On August 25th, Harbor Medical celebrated the opening of our Pulmonary Function Laboratory, as part of our Physician Diagnostics Sleep Laboratory.

A pulmonary function test is designed to measure how well the lungs are working.  Pulmonary function tests (PFT's) gage how the lungs are carrying out their tasks - of expanding and contracting (when a person inhales and exhales) and of exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide efficiently between the air (or other gases) within the lungs and the blood.

For example, one pulmonary function test calls for the patient to breathe into a machine called a spirometer.  It is a mechanical device that records the changes in lung size as air is inhaled and exhaled, and the time it takes for the patient to do this task.

The pulmonary function lab is staffed by a Registered Respiratory Therapist who is certified to perform pulmonary function tests.  Using state of the art equipment from Morgan Scientific, we offer a complete array of pulmonary tests including pre and post bronchodilator spirometry, flow volume loops, diffusion studies, and lung volumes by plethysmography.  Dr. Matthew Weiss and Dr. Richard Ashburn provide the pulmonologists' interpretation for all studies.

The laboratory is located at 541 Main Street, Suite 314, in South Weymouth, and is opened for testing Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m., and Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.
